Men are being lured to agonizing deaths in the small Louisiana city of Aimsley. Brutalized bodies are displayed on the riverbank and in little-travelled bayou country, and a mysterious dark-eyed beauty may be connected. It's a case with tremendous human suffering and a challenging political labyrinth for Sheriff Ty Hood. It means calling on the last person he wants to for help - his son.
Former FBI agent Wayland Hood is a brilliant criminologist and writer. He's immersed in a project to unravel the mysteries inside the minds of four of America's most heinous serial killers. Only unresolved issues with his father can draw him into the dark quest for buried secrets that fuel modern bloodshed. As father and son clash with each other and with television reporter Jemy Reardon, who has her own goals and theories, the body count increases. Only a terrifying excursion into the darkest heart of midnight can bring the nightmare to an end.

Midnight Eyes is a thriller set in Louisiana, an area of the country Williams knows well, having grown up there. A serial killer is working one of the small Louisiana towns and an embattled sheriff and his FBI profiler son have to solve the case before more die. Along the way they have to deal with their own shattered relationship. The writing here is very fine and the "killer" is definitely a bit different from what the reader starts out expecting. There are some nice twists and turns along the way, and a really exciting action sequence at the end. The characters are well drawn and seem very real, including the killer.
Good stuff.

Midnight Eyes (Audible Audio Edition) Sidney Williams A C Fellner Crossroad Press Books Reviews
I have read several of Mr. Williams' shorter works. This was my first trip with him down the long path. It's a hefty book and it took me some time to get through. This is a good thing -- there is such rich character development and build-up as the book moves forward that I think it would be shame to try to slam through the book. The setting -- humid, thick Louisiana air -- hangs heavy over the investigation of a serious of artful if nightmarish murders. I was reminded a bit of the show Dexter, but the author is much better at building suspense. Supremely visual with some clever twists. I do believe I will be investigating the other novels by the author.

Interesting, albeit disturbing, psychological exploration into the dark depths of the human psyche help compensate for a slow middle act in Midnight Eyes.
Summary
Aging Louisiana Sheriff Ty Hood never expected to have to deal with a brutal serial killer. With reporters, politicians, and glory-hungry private detectives all breathing down his neck, he reaches out to his estranged son Wayland, a former FBI profiler who specializes in serial killers.
Review
Serial killers represent true horror. They are humans that have abandoned humanity; beasts with the intelligence of a men.
Midnight Eyes explores these dark relatives of mainstream humanity in often disturbing detail. Accordingly, this novel is not for the faint of heart. Although the book doesn't revel in gore, a victim-mutilating serial killer is a key aspect of the book. More disturbing, and a testament to the author's characterization skills, is the mental insight and depth provided into serial killers (both the primary antagonist and already imprisoned killer near the start of the book). They are monsters, yes, but monsters with depth.
The non-killers in the book are also, for the most part, well-developed. The strained interaction between the father and son provides a nice bit of character tension. Ty and Wayland have distinct personalities. Watching the investigation unfold from the different perspectives makes it a bit more engaging. In addition, seeing the two different styles of police work the men represent was also interesting.
Most of the other side-characters are given sufficient development. They all come off as distinct individuals even if they are not presented with as nearly much depth as Ty and Wayland. The author even takes a little time to use a journalist character to explore the tension between keeping the public informed and withholding information to protect the public.
Unfortunately, although that theme is somewhat interesting and well-informed by the author's journalism background, the journalist character does feel slightly superfluous to the narrative. Overall, her presence tends to slightly slow the narrative by spreading out the plot a bit too much at certain key points.
This is particularly an issue in the middle acts of the story. The identity of the killer is made clear relatively early on though there the author still manages to keep some surprises for the reader. Although knowing the identity of the killer doesn't necessarily inherently damage tension, the dramatic value of the presente police investigation (with realistic, though potentially frustrating-dead ends) isn't strong enough to fully compensate. A thriller thrives on constant tension, and I didn't always feel the tension or urgency. I will note that watching the other side of the investigation, from the killer's POV provided more than a few genuinely creepy moments.
The closing act managed great tension and a few final twists. It took full advantage of the time spent earlier with character development to add some emotional depth to the final chapters.

My consuming lust was to experience their bodies. I viewed them as objects, as strangers. It is hard for me to believe a human being could have done what I’ve done. – Jeffrey Dahmer
We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow – Ted Bundy (Lady Killer)
11280748We live in isolation. The 1950’s really started the whole “Nuclear Family” phenomenon. Mother, father, children, living in isolation, grandparents and the rest of the extended family in their own little isolated pods as well. But, what happens when the Nuclear family itself goes nuclear? And what happens to the children… Nobody ever told the story of the kids, after… Because sometimes, those families contain monsters.
The setting of Midnight Eyes is one that I truly enjoy. The swamps of southern Louisiana are the perfect setting for a serial murder mystery, with its slow, deliberate pace, brutal wet heat and the scents of swamp water and death, magnolia and rot. As you enter the swamps, it is through the past, as a serial killer strikes and then disappearing, leaving a town and its sheriff shell-shocked and the sheriff embittered for the remainder of his life.
Now, many years later the murders are happening again. Murders of such horror and brutal viciousness that the mutilation of the victims while still alive horrifies even a hardened FBI Criminal Profiler who specializes in serial killers.
I found the pace of the story somewhat uneven, but still compelling as everyone from reporters to private detectives reach for what one can only call a twisted sort of glory as they track the monster in their midst.

Readers of “true crime” might actually enjoy the story as the author utilizes his own experience as a journalist to make the setting and characters as realistic as possible.
I received this book from Audiobooks Monthly in return for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.
The author Sidney Williams will be interviewed in the October issue of Audio Book Monthly Magazine.
Thoughtful, suspenseful, and at times terrifying. This is a cat and mouse game between a brutal serial killer and the profiler tasked with catching him. Added to that is the fact that the profiler's father is the sheriff leading the task force and their relationship is dysfunctional at best. A human monster on the loose, a compelling mystery, a great character drama, and it all plays out against the backdrop of the southern Louisiana bayous.
